In my first wisdom series, I begin with introducing you to Twitter. As much as we all know about the Twitter phenomenon, most of us are yet to understand the power of this microblogging social medium and the way it is revolutionizing businesses and powering their networks. So, with my social media ‘twilby’ firmly in place I set out to explain my understanding of ‘the what’, ‘the how’ and ‘the why’ of Twitter, your voice to the world.

What is Twitter?

Twitter is essentially one very large continuous conversation being had by millions of people as we speak. In the last year itself, the usage has risen by 93%. This microblog is designed in such a way that the conversation is narrowed into two principal groups, the followers and the followed. You, as a user, have a choice who to follow and who follows you. It is advisable to have a high ratio of followers v/s followed , say 1:10 ratio is excellent to get your voice echoed beyond your immediate network.

This then narrows down to third and final basic stage with the type of conversations you have and with whom you’re having it with. It’s completely open to however you want to use this new toy. If you want to keep your feed as broad as possible, then you have that choice, but if you want to narrow it down to your specialism, your interest or hobby or corporate sphere then you can do that too. It is, like any social networking site, it’s for you to tame it the way you want.

Why should I sign up for Twitter?

Many communication experts and Marketers have been asking me why they should sign-up? “What’s the point?” In many cases it’s a valid point. A recent survey reveals that over 60% of online users who sign up, leave Twitter in a month. This may be due to their short attention spans or the inability to comprehend what it can do. One of my colleague at iridium Interactive was sharing that its not different to the SMS that we send and thinking in 140. But, take a deeper dive and you might just find a layer or two of digital pie that suits your corporate palette and the benefits are vast and untapped. So, take the jump and take-off your social media.

You might find this short video helpful with due credits to Common Craft.

It was a Tuesday and I was so used to sitting alone at my bay thinking what to do next, thatz when Sriram walked with a smile and said “lets meet up in 15 minutes” I was excited or rather shocked to know what it is that Sriram could call me for?? I walked in after 15 minutes for the meeting and I was amazed to see so many people in the conference room waiting for me. I was thinking what could they be waiting for me for? As the discussion started, Sriram offered me a new role in the marketing team. Initially I was confused thinking that I guess people at iridium realized that I had very little to do thatz why I was offered to do this. But it was not too late before I understood that they actually wanted me to do activities (probably they thought I was capable enough ;)) like the one they offered me to write for them. I’ve had no idea what blogging is or what writing is ,all I knew that I can TALK!! I was then told blogging is like talking only the mediums change, that was a relief. When all this was happening I knew that I was learning something new which really impressed me,becoz I was always open to learn new things.., I was talking to myself and always aimed to be an Enterpreneur ( Jack of all trades and master of None ) and was smiling to myself. This will be a good learning as an entrepreneur too!!

Later when all this was happening as usual my friends @iridiuminter were going for a sip of Tea ( Chai ) is what we call. And they were smiling @ me thinking finally this man has got something to do. I really wanted to share this with my other colleagues but it was too late as they already left .I stayed till 8:15 like never before and Roshni my Collegue was really amazed to see me working so late and I was really working!!

When I gathered my thoughts and started writing I was amazed and impressed with the spontaneous culture at iridium Interactive where they are open to teach and train people in any field. I am excited to be a part of this spontaniety and this is my spontaneous write up for all you reading this J

I will be writing more often on many more topics so stay tuned and await my upcoming blog entries.

As I get a reminder to an already accepted invitation to a Leadership Team Meet on Wednesday, nothing was actually going on in my mind as I grabbed a note pad and made my way to the conference room, expecting another routine meeting with the team as it was always done in Google. There were a lot more people in the meeting than I had expected people from the testing, creative and sales team (which I got to know later). With a brief introduction of all those present in the room I realized the number of super intelligent people sharing the same space as me, one a Harvard pass out, another a MIT graduate, Whaoo!! With strategists, marketing gurus and design experts all in the same room, I could not have been more pepped up to be associated with people of such stature. This meeting was anything like the serious work focused huddles Iwas used to in Google, no tasks to be delegated, no deadlines discussed…nothing… it was all fun and play here. Sriram Bharatam, CEO of iridium Interactive starting the meeting stating “we lost half a million last year, but this should not deter our confidence in ourselves. We will begin this year with new perspectives to achieve what we are all standing here for”. This was some start to a meeting; I could feel the transparency between the people in the room as each one discussed their concerns and learning’s from the projects and the company. Taking inputs and collective wisdom from each other one of the team members said “we are so busy working that we have stopped enjoying success, we have stopped smiling!!” This motivated everyone present to shed their stress and have fun while working. This represented the company’s core value that motivates everyone to enjoy their work and not get bogged down. This was impressive.. never can I imagine my manager telling me to chill and work, but this was the culture of iridium Interactive unlike any other conventional companies. Boredom was far away from my thoughts as this fun frolicking meeting just did not give anyone a chance to get bored. Later in the end I got to know that this was my official induction in their company. I for one completely enjoyed this one of a kind induction and would definitely look forward to work with iridium Interactive and be a part of more of their enjoyable meetings.

Last week, the foundation installed a water treatment facility in a village near Hyderabad.

Within a few hours, close to 100 people on his network responded, says Bharatam. “Initially, the comments were about how great the project was. Then, a few started asking more serious questions such as ‘What is reverse osmosis?’. I started getting into the details like the chlorine levels in the water which can cause disability, and that it takes Rs2 lakh to install a water treatment unit. It was then that five people came forward to donate money. In one day, I inspired these five people to give around Rs10 lakh.”

According to Bharatam, 10 years ago he would have had to put in a lot of effort convincing people. “Today, I am having a simple conversation and call to action is happening.”

The internet, especially social networking, is a great enabler for people who have a cause, but lack the wherewithal to get a large number of people to pay attention offline. Ask Ranjeet Walunj, a Mumbai-based professional, who started The Sapling Project this month. The project aims to get people all over the city to plant saplings (which were given away for free at the inaugral event) and nurture them for two years.

Walunj and his friend Satish Vijaykumar with whom he started the project, talked extensively about The Sapling Project on Twitter and Facebook. “The first level of contact with people we have is on social media,” says Walunj explaining why social media was central to The Sapling Project. “We could have opted for offline media, but the problem is that I cannot measure its impact. For example, I won’t know how many people will come for distribution. But in online media, I know exactly who is doing what. Measurability is an important reason for opting for social media.”

There was also an off-shoot. Following Walunj’s posts, bloggers from Chennai and Bangalore too got interested and started chapters of the Sapling Project in their cities.

Collaborative Tool
Social media can be used not just to raise money, spread the word or get people together. It’s a great tool for collaboration and drawing upon a diversity of expertise. IIT Bombay, for example, has built an online service called aAqua (aaqua.org) that allows farmers to post queries related to farming or allied activities (such as setting up a dairy).
According to Krithi Ramamritham of the Department of Computer Science & Engineering at IIT Bombay, a set of experts from various Krishi Vigyan Kendras and some agricultural universities then provide solutions to the problems which the farmers can implement.

This is similar to Yahoo Answers, where you post any question, and someone from the community provides the answers. The key difference, Ramamritham points out, is that “both the farmers and experts are shy of computers.” Still, after about five years of operation, close to 15,000 people have registered with aAqua and now around 25,000 farmers get their answers on SMSes, says Ramamritham.

Social media’s “reach” however does not ensure success. Many causes that grow through tweets and pokes fizzle out quickly. Netra Parikh who works with Pinstorm, a Mumbai-based online marketing agency, and an active Tweeter, says, “I myself have experienced that. Causes tend to fizzle out due to lack of consistency, determination, and focus. But most important, one needs to own that cause.”

Beyond I, Me, Myself
Bharatam agrees. “Conversation is merely the trigerring point to start anything. And social media is where conversations happen. But you have to follow up. A casual conversation should turn into a serious conversation, then into an organised conversation, which finally will result in concrete action.” Bharatam who started Cause an Effect as a website to raise money to help victims of the 1999 Orissa cyclone, says that while the online medium makes things easier, it is also very demanding. “Internet itself was a new concept in India when I first started the website. People wanted to know who I was and how they could be sure I wouldn’t run away with the money. It took a week for me to convince people about the cause. Initially we were asking people to send in cheques. But that was taking too long. So we set up a system where people could wire the money. Next, someone suggested that we put up a payment gateway so people could pay with credit cards. I didn’t even know what an online payment gateway was!” Bharatam was just an ordinary citizen with a regular job when he started the website. But it turned out to be a 24/7 job. “I don’t know whether people have that kind of commitment. If you look at Twitter or Facebook right now, it is all about I, me, myself. There is no agenda. There is no focused activity. If there’s a single point agenda, people will respond to you.”

As a person who began my career with NGOs , what attracted me to iridium Interactive in the first place was the importance the company accords to social responsibility – be it through the various social welfare activities of CauseanEffect or by training and employing disabled people or as crusaders of web accessibility. And Sriram has been at the helm of it all ..

Recently, as a representative of iridium Interactive and the Cause an Effect Foundation, I was honored with the Udyog Rattan Award in recognition of contributions towards the empowerment of the disabled. The Udyog Rattan Award is conferred by the Institute of Economic Studies in New Delhi, one among the country’s premier research institutes.

The Institute of Economic Studies was established in 1980 by a group of economists, parliamentarians and industrialists who came together to study and discuss problems concerning various aspects of the economy and economic development of India and offer their expert advice and services.

While the award itself deserves no more than a passing mention, I do believe that the work it recognized could do with a lot more awareness and support. We founded the Cause an Effect Foundation (CnE) in 1999 to help the victims of the super cyclone that affected Orissa that year. Leveraging the power of internet, we built a global community and raised funds to the tune of 1.8 million$ in just 45 days.

The CnE Foundation then went on to generate funds for the victims of the Gujarat earthquake and Andhra floods, as well as the Tsunami-affected victims across Tamil Nadu and AP. In all CnE projects, iridium Interactive functions as the commercial interactive agency, and has been highly successful in generating awareness and publicity for the various initiatives. It is heartening to see the ii management and employees wholeheartedly contribute their time and expertise to these initiatives.

A lot of the work that we do is mainly in the area of empowerment of the disabled. The process of empowering disabled people is an end-to-end value chain that spans Iridium and CnE, and is done through multiple initiatives. CnE has conducted disability camps bringing together the State Governments, transport authorities and medical personnel to issue 5000 disability certificates to the differently-abled. It has also conducted livelihood trainings that have empowered a thousand people with financial viability, and workshops in education and English language to bring the differently-abled community closer to the mainstream and services on offer through the internet.

A focus area for me personally, and for ii at large, is that of Web accessibility and usability, i.e. making websites accessible for the differently-abled. ii has been instrumental in promoting ‘web accessibility’ for visually impaired and motor disabled people, enabling them to access technology- and information-related products through the use of Internet. We work to create awareness amongst website owners (government and private) on the need to make sites accessible to disabled users, and also on promoting Internet usage within the disabled sections of the society. Additionally, we have also helped in making various websites (dealing with employment, transport and travel, education, and e-banking) user-friendly for people with disabilities, thereby promoting equal opportunities for disabled people.

All CnE initiatives are for the betterment of the marginalized or disadvantaged communities in India, be it the differently-abled, or the rural poor. For instance, another project that we are very invested in is that of livelihood training, where we have used the power of ICT to develop 7 livelihood training modules for rural farmers and fisherfolk, to train them in alternative livelihoods.

As I mentioned earlier on, the causes that we work for could always do with more publicity and more support. Being awarded a prestigious award like the Udyog Rattan focuses attention on our causes and turns the spotlight on them.
To know more about CnE efforts in these and other areas, I encourage you to visit the website (www.causeaneffect.org) and perhaps even join our community.

About Iridium Interactive

iridium Interactive (ii) specializes in offering unique user-centric e-business solutions. With a presence across three continents, it has been at the forefront in integrating strategy, design and technology to build unique, robust user-centric e-business solutions. We take the time to understand our client’s goals and develop interactive solutions to meet them. Our talented team has worked on a variety of disciplines for a multitude of clients drawn from various industries, and has a number of award-winning works to its credit. In the year 2007 iridium Interactive was chosen by NASSCOM as one of the top 100 Innovators of India.

iridium Interactive operates in the digital virtual world – but with the feet firmly entrenched in the physical real world. The raison de’ etre is social responsibility. And that’s the core genesis.
Speaking on this occasion Sriram said, “We believe that every citizen has a responsibility to give back to the society, and we at iridium Interactive have steadfastly followed this adage. Our socially responsible approach is our differentiator – bringing smiles to more faces, and winning us a few accolades along the way. We translate our ideology into action in many ways: we advocate web accessibility in the virtual world; while working towards up-lifting the disabled in the real world through our non-profit arm, Cause an Effect foundation.”

Cause an Effect (CnE) is an award winning Not-for-Profit organization with international repute focusing on Disability, Organic farming and Livelihood. The organization harnesses the potential of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) for sustainable and equitable development, to enable the poor and the marginalized communities to transform their lives.

The process of empowering disabled is an end-to-end value chain that spans Iridium and Cause an effect, and is done through multiple initiatives. Cause an Effect has conducted disability camps bringing together the State Governments, transport authorities and medical personnel to issue 5000 disability certificates to the differently abled. It has also conducted livelihood trainings that have empowered thousands of people with financial viability, and workshops in education and English language to bring the needy community closer to the mainstream.

iridium has also been instrumental in promoting ‘web accessibility’ for visually impaired and motor disabled people, enabling them to access technology- and information-related products through the use of Internet. The company creates awareness amongst website owners (government and private) on the need to make sites accessible to disabled users, and also on promoting Internet usage within the disabled sections of the society.

About Sriram Bharatam
