Fisherfolk have been the most affected by the Indian Ocean and Arabian Sea tsunamis of 26 December. They have not only lost many loved ones but also their livelihoods, homes as well as their fishing gear and boats. Many are fearful of returning to the sea and suffer from extreme post-disaster trauma. A couple of months after the tsunami, most of the relief camps have been closed. With this background in mind, a proposal was conceptualized to undertake the ?Training Fisherfolk on Alternative Means of Livelihood through a Scalable & Sustainable mode?. As a part of this initiative Different Training Modules have been made using audio / video / computer based training / transparencies to put back the lives of the fishermen back on the track of rehabilitation and to train the Fisher Folk on improving their basic skills to help them find alternative means of livelihood, thereby leading to increased self-reliance and overall rehabilitation and development.

This initiative was jointly undertaken with MCKS Food for the Hungry. Keeping in mind the similarity of objectives of Causeaneffect and MCKS Foundation’s ?Livelihood Program?. We got associated and started working towards creating the means of ?Alternative Livelihoods? for the Tsunami affected victims. As a part of this initiative, Seven Training modules that make up the entire kit for Training the Tsunami Victims in Alternative Livelihood are being developed jointly. A Team of Volunteers of GMCKS and Causeaneffect are undertaking the Training of these modules to various affected victims. These Training Modules will be primarily developed in Telugu.

The Planning, Monitoring, Production and Execution of the Training Modules would be done with the assistance of iridium Interactive Limited, Hyderabad.

As of now the death toll in India is 7,000. The waves whipped nine coastal districts of AP on Sunday (26th December 2004) morning leaving a trail of devastation and more than 110 dead. However Prakasam, Nellore and Krishna are the worst hit districts with West Godavari and Guntur also reporting smaller figures. Around 2.75 lakh fisher folk are out of a job for the next few days. In Nellore District, 9 Mandals, Indukurpet, Tadepalligudem, Muthukur, Bogole, Allur, Vidavalur, Kavali, Vakadu, Kota, Chillakur mandals were affected by the Tsunami leaving thousands of families with no means of sustaining a livelihood.

From the initial assessment survey conducted, Anjalapuram from Vakadu Mandal was identified to carry out Relief measures. Anjalapuram is a village accessible by travelling ? km by boat and ? km on foot from Dugarajpuram which is 17 kms from Vakadu, the Mandal head quarters. Owing to the difficulty in accessing the village, it was neither the target for the government or the NGO relief and rehabilitation programs. Many houses in this village were completely wiped out and many houses were partially damaged by the tidal wave. All these people had was washed away and the livelihood of the community completely wiped out.

Information on all the families affected was collected – most of whom were fisher folk and girijan families. These worst effected and vulnerable families were identified and provided relief. The relief package included cooking vessels, crockery and cutlery.
