Mera Bharat Mahaan

Where the mind is without fear and the head is held high;
Where knowledge is free;
Where the world has not been broken up
into fragments by narrow domestic walls;
Where words come out from the depth of truth;
Where tireless striving stretches its arms towards perfection;
Where the clear stream of reason has not lost its way
into the dreary desert sand of dead habit;
Where the mind is led forward by thee into ever-widening thought and action
Into that heaven of freedom, my Father, let my country awake

-Rabindranath Tagore

The vision articulated by Rabindranath Tagore through this poem is all encompassing in every sense. It has laid down all that would constitute the “heaven of freedom”. Having it all- peace and security, self respect and self esteem, access to information and knowledge, unity, integrity and honesty within and around you, efficiency, innovations, creativity-in whatever measure, is reason to celebrate. And celebrate we did, on the eve of the 61st Independence Day of India.Infact celebrations started a week earlier with a patriotic song competition. All the teams participated with passion and spirit and enthralled the audience. This event brought in a celebratory mood that persisted in the days to follow. August 14th Morning: There is a lot of color everywhere -the ladies and gents dressed in ethnic wear, balloons, flags, flowers, decorations …A flurry of activity is seen all around as bay decorations progress.The celebrations start post lunch on a patriotic note, with our team sharing their thoughts on what freedom and patriotism mean to them. What follows is a fun filled afternoon with skits, songs, impromptu quizzes, games, cake cutting, prize distribution for the various competitions. All in all, a day filled with fun and laughter, but what will stay with me for a very long time is 52seconds of the day. Moments of unity and oneness, when all of us stood together, absolutely still, with head held high and heart filled with pride and sang the National Anthem in unison. Jai Hind!!
