Paradigm shift in Delivery

I’m at a very interesting phase of my career where after spending 13 years in the IT industry working for some big guns delivering complex enterprise applications, I’m trying to understand the new puzzle thrown at me. I feel like treading on water which looks familiar but makes me uncomfortable as there is still something lurking beneath which I’m not familiar. My initial friendly interactions with Dipesh and the sprinkling of magic dust from Sriram finally made me part of the ii family. Little did I realize where I was heading….very confident that there couldn’t be anything big or worse than what I have seen in my career so far…and before I could realize I was in a vortex of creative wow.

All along my career I enjoyed playing with the technologies and the tools around them. As I evolved, I accumulated enough ammo for delivering complex projects. Just like the guy with an affinity for branded products, I fancied and was fortunate enough to work with top IT companies in the world. Worked all along on enterprise applications and understood the good processes and practices in delivering successfully a quality product.

Early in the career, I spent about a year working on X windows/Motif and this was my first exposure to creative concepts. X windows is an extremely powerful platform that allows programmers to develop sophisticated user interface. After working for an year, I made a conscious decision to dive into the matrix of complex technologies…Maybe the decision was more to satisfy my inner self.

Now that I’m here and trying to swim my way through the creative wow, I realize the new dimension which is in front of me.

A dimension to see the same world differently… appreciate the technology along with the creative aspects…understand what it takes to think, innovate and deliver the creative work.

The best analogy I can think off are the products from Apple. The moment I saw the Mac Air I was amazed, stunned, had no words, couldn’t stop looking at it..spellbound. I see my key leadership team flashing their iphones, going ga ga about it with everyone, creating an opportunity to talk about it. Why is iPhone such a hit? What makes Mac Air look absolutely stunning?Apple is successful with these products for its aesthetic design…The creative dimension is the one which gets the initial attention; you are in love at the first sight. Taking this euphoria further, one explores the features and the supporting technology. Apple folks were far ahead in thinking in terms of technology whether it was their operating systems or graphical user interface…..and in recent years added the creative element to their product line which made them a world wide “cult”. I don’t see us different in our thought process from the folks @ Apple. We also get our customers showcasing our creative talent and have the required technology to support it.

Now that I understand where I stand, the big challenge ahead of me is to get the right processes around the creativity. Need processes which will marry both the creative and technology folks. I need to put in a proper structure in place for a successful repeatable quality delivery. I don’t anticipate an easy journey ahead but am confident that I will reach the destination successfully.
