Being Invited to World of Dance !

16th April 2011 is a day that I would always remember as a memorable experience. Janhavi, my colleague who is a Bharatanatyam dancer invited me as a Chief Guest to her institute’s annual function. I never had any inclination for classical dance but nevertheless there is always a first time so I accepted the invitation. I had always heard Janhavi talking about her shows and her travelling experiences but would hardly give a thought to the fact if she really was a good dancer not because she wasn’t good at it but because I was always engrossed in work.

This year’s annual function actually gave me an insight into what the world of dance is and how important it is for us to be connected to our cultural traditions whether it is music or dance. I was amazed at the number of students who came in batches to perform in front of a jam packed audience of 200 people. There were students of all age groups and some were as young as 5 but what actually surprised me was the fact that these young kids came and performed so confidently at that young age without any inhibitions and it was such a pleasure to watch them perform with that million dollar smile on their small pretty little faces. This is when I realized what I had missed out on in the last 4 years when Janhavi would incessantly invite me for all her performances and I would say I will try and come but could never make it because of some reasons or the other though none of them were deliberate.

Now that I have a daughter I have decided I would definitely want my daughter to learn the expression of self through this wonderful medium of dance. No matter what dance form it is it would get me her step closer to the spiritual supreme as art is also considered as a road to salvation.

We often hear people saying silence speaks and when it is through the medium of dance it doesn’t merely become a language it becomes an expression. I am glad Janhavi invited me and I shall make sure next time she invites me I will surely make it a point to attend her performance with my daughter.
