Relief Measures in Tsunami Affected VillagesA Tsunami set off by an earthquake unleashed a trail of death and destruction in half a dozen countries in South and South-East Asia, killing more than 24,000 people. As of now the death toll in India is 7,000. The waves whipped nine coastal districts of AP on Sunday (26th December 2004) morning leaving a trail of devastation and more than 110 dead. However Prakasam, Nellore and Krishna are the worst hit districts with West Godavari and Guntur also reporting smaller figures. Around 2.75 lakh fisher folk are out of a job for the next few days. In Nellore District, 9 Mandals, Indukurpet, Tadepalligudem, Muthukur, Bogole, Allur, Vidavalur, Kavali, Vakadu, Kota, Chillakur mandals were affected by the Tsunami leaving thousands of families with no means of sustaining a livelihood.

From the initial assessment survey conducted, Anjalapuram from Vakadu Mandal was identified to carry out Relief measures. Anjalapuram is a village accessible by travelling ? km by boat and ? km on foot from Dugarajpuram which is 17 kms from Vakadu, the Mandal head quarters. Owing to the difficulty in accessing the village, it was neither the target for the government or the NGO relief and rehabilitation programs. Many houses in this village were completely wiped out and many houses were partially damaged by the tidal wave. All these people had was washed away and the livelihood of the community completely wiped out.

Information on all the families affected was collected – most of whom were fisher folk and girijan families. These worst effected and vulnerable families were identified and provided relief. The relief package included cooking vessels, crockery and cutlery.
